Review: Dave Brubeck - Time Out -50th Anniversary (2 CD/1 DVD Legacy Edition) [Enhanced]

Audio CD (May 26, 2009)
Original Release Date: 1959
Number of Discs: 3
Format: Enhanced
Label: Sony Legacy
ASIN: B001S6Y0AQ

Description (Legacy Recordings Website)
Dave Brubeck has long served as proof that creative jazz and popular success can go together. Although critics who had championed him when he was unknown seemed to scorn him when the Dave Brubeck Quartet became a surprise success, in reality Brubeck never watered down or altered his music in order to gain a wide audience. Creative booking (being one of the first groups to play regularly on college campuses) and a bit of luck resulted in great popularity, and Dave Brubeck remains one of the few household names in jazz. Review
First I have to say that I was really excited when I was offered this CD set to review.  I'm a big Dave Brubeck fan (which isn't something people my age generally say ;).  I grew up listening to this collection on vinyl.  My dad LOVED Dave Brubeck and I grew up listening to him.  Listening to this CD set really brought back memories!

Listen To A Sample!

I'd love to see this re-release introduce a whole new generation to Dave Brubeck!  This is an amazing collection that any lover of jazz should have in their collection.  I'm thrilled to have this collection made available once again! If you want to add some great music to your collection, this is it!

Thanks to Sony Legacy Recordings for providing me with a copy of this great CD collection to review!

Review of Starfield "The Saving One"

Canadian modern worship band Starfield is getting ready to release it's latest studio project, The Saving One, on February 23, 2010 and I was lucky enough to get an advance copy to review!

I had never heard of Starfield before receiving this CD, but I'm definitely a fan now. The CD features energetic worship songs, showcasing the harmonies of brothers Tim and Jon Neufeld on 10 worship anthems. These songs really speak to the listener and has songs of a more personal tone.

This is an excellent CD and I encourage all of you to check it out. If you're looking for some music that really speaks to you, you have to look no further than this one! Believe me, this one will have you on your feet and doing some worshipping!

The single 'Rediscover You' was released in December and is available on iTunes and Amazon MP3.

"'Rediscover You' blends a catchy melody with honest and vulnerable lyrics that Starfield fans will be sure to love", says the group's label Sparrow Records.

Starfield will also be hitting the road and performing at various 'Dare 2 Share' conferences around the US during February and March.

'The Saving One' Track Listing:
1. The Saving One
2. Rediscover You
3. Declaration
4. No Other Savior
5. Something To Say
6. Absolutely
7. Overwhelm
8. Top Of My Lungs

Gorgeous Jewelry

I was recently offered the chance to review LuShae Jewelry, a great jewelry site, and was offered a piece of jewelry in the bargain.

I chose the Princess Promise Ring

Description (website)
Princess Promise Ring
White Gold Princess promise ring featuring Princess Cut Center CZ with Pave Round CZ Trim
The princess promise ring's illustrious shine stems from the combination of its brilliant princess cut center stone and round stones that align the shoulders. Its tantalizing silver tone will make your heart melt. White Gold Rhodium Bond is achieved using an electroplating process that coats the item with heavy layers of rhodium, a close cousin of platinum that costs three times as much, which gives our jewelry a platinum luster.

When the ring arrived I have to tell you that I was thrilled by how gorgeous it was! The stones really sparkled and look beautiful on my hand - not so large it was garish and unreal looking. I held off on the review til I could wear it out a couple of times to get people's reactions to the ring.

As I expected, my friend's all thought it was an absolutely gorgeous ring and wanted the web address. I'd really recommend everyone checking the site out. They carry rings, earrings and pendants and all are individually handcrafted. They feature cultured freshwater and saltwater pearls, precious and semi-precious gemstones, and precious metals. They are continually adding new designs that are exclusive to LuShae and won't be found anywhere else.

I love my ring, but have now spotted some new designs on their site that I love also! I'd heartily encourage all of you to check out the site for some gorgeous designs!

Proverbs 29:25 says: “The fear of man brings a snare: but who so puts his trust in the Lord shall be safe.” Sometimes we fear what men can do to us. We should never fear this way because God is greater than man. Man does not hold your eternity. Man does not even hold your tomorrow. Man does not hold your well-being; only God does. So don't fear men anymore because God is your helper.

I got this in email from my Pastor today...and I thought it was a good place to start with the new me concept. I can just see the wheels turning and you're wondering how this ties in with weight loss?

Well, I think fear is a huge, huge factor in weight loss. We're afraid to go out or where clothes we like because we've gained weight and we're afraid of how people will think we look in them. Let's face it...people can be nasty so we tend to be afraid we're going to have people talking about us either directly (which is always humiliating) or behind our backs.

And once you've declared that you're dieting or working out, I think we tend to be afraid to go admit when we're having problems and aren't doing as well as we'd like with it.

I think the biggest fear involved with weight loss is failure. We psych ourselves out before we even get started. Magazines tell us to put up pics from magazines showing how you want to look and use them for inspiration. The only problem with that is for some of us we have a long way to go and the end goal seems so far out of reach that we never even get started!

Here's what I've discovered about the process and myself in the last two years:
  • I'm afraid I won't get to where I want/need to be
  • I'm afraid of disappointing family and friends
  • I'm afraid I won't know how to live as the new person I want to be
  • I have control issues
  • I don't like to exercise
  • I don't like to exercise
  • I don't like to exercise
  • I don't like to exercise
I've had some major life changes in the past year, and each one has taken adjustment and time. Now I'm working on another major change - living on my own - and it's going to take some adjustment too.

I'm recognizing past bad habits and trying not to fall back into them...and it's tough.

But I'm also recognizing that this is a process and it won't happen overnight...so I'm trying to not be afraid of failing one day and letting that shoot me in the foot for the whole rest of my life. That might be my biggest lesson that I have to keep learning and reinforcing on a daily basis. That even if I lose a daily skirmish, I can still go on and win the war.

A Whole New Me

In May I had major surgery (a panniculectomy ), in August the entire family (pic) flew out to California for my sons wedding (so I gained another gorgeous daughter-in-law), then the end of November I moved back into my own apartment, and a week later my beautiful little granddaughter Emma was born. I am definitely a very blessed woman!

In the past two years since I checked myself into the nursing home I've lost 185# which I'm very proud of myself for. I havent' had weight loss surgery and instead I opted for some really intense PT and working on reducing my caloric intake.

Since I've been home I've struggled more as I knew I would. I also know that I have to make some real lifestyle changes, instead of drifting back to where I was before. One of the things that I've struggled with is spending so much time either reading or on the computer composing reviews. I somehow needed to combine the reviewing with a new more aware, fit lifestyle. After a lot of thought I have a plan!

One of the first things is that you'll be seeing a lot more of my daily struggle with moving more and eating less. I'm going to be accountable to my blog and to all of you. I'm going to get very real, and very honest. My hope is that you'll feel like jumping into the conversation with me.

I'm going to start by changing the focus of my reviewing. I love reading novels but right now they aren't helping me get to where I want to be. So while you'll still see reviews of great fiction here (mostly because I can't pass up on a great book!), but I'm going to refocus on books about diet, cooking, weight-loss, and anything else that will help me become a better me...both on the inside and the outside.

I'm going to start with a new look for the blog and a new name - and I'll be rolling those out in the next week or so. New year, new look, new more healthy and fit Marta.

I hope that you'll stick with me, and hopefully I'll give you some information that you can use in your daily life.

I have some great books, dvd's and other healthier lifestyle resources that I'm going to share with you in the coming weeks - and I hope you tell me about the things that inspire you to stay fit and healthy.

Review
This was an entertaining book.  That said, this was the 5th book in this series and I find myself wanting to go back and eventually pick up the other books in the series. This was a fun book with lots of action and adventure. If you love these books about the faeries and that type of highland book, then this is definitely a winner.

Thank you to Pocket Books for providing me with a copy of this book to review.

Guest Post by Kim West, LCSW-C, Author of The Sleep Lady's Good Night, Sleep Tight

I thought this was an interesting and always helpful guest post.  I've included some pics of my favorite sleeping newborn, my new granddaughter Emma ;)

Your Newborn and Sleep
By Kim West, LCSW-C,
Author of The Sleep Lady®'s Good Night, Sleep Tight: Gentle Proven Solutions to Help Your Child Sleep Well and Wake Up Happy

As a parent, you will learn that children need a certain amount of rules and structure. Not rigidity for the sake of rigidity, but a framework to give them predictability and security. And as a family therapist and sleep expert who has worked with thousands of parents, I've realized that parents need rules and structure too! So here are eight "rules" for parents of newborns These rules won't get little tiny babies to sleep all night. They aren't supposed to sleep all night in those first few weeks and months, they need to eat too frequently. But if you follow these rules, you can ever so gently get your baby on a gentle path toward good sleep habits so you won't have to struggle with night wakenings and sleep deprivation -- for all of you -- indefinitely.
1. Create a flexible feeding and sleeping routine.
Babies like predictability. Routines also make parenting easier. A routine helps you figure out why a baby may be crying. Ask yourself -- how long has she been awake? When did he last eat? If you know by your schedule that he is well-fed and well-rested then you can move on to: Is he hot or cold? Is she over stimulated? Is his diaper wet? Does she need a quiet environment? Keep a simple log to detect your baby's emerging patterns. By about six to eight weeks, you should have a bedtime routine that ends with some quiet time at the baby's bedside. As they get older, you will add books and quiet songs and all your own little rituals to make bedtime both a special parent-child time and a time and space for the child's mind and body to wind down and prepare for sleep.
2. Encourage soothing techniques other than nursing.
Having a whole bag of soothing tricks helps you avoid having a baby that can only calm and put himself to sleep by sucking on a breast or bottle. Instead of feeding your child at every whimper, try swaddling, holding them on their side while cradling them in your arms, gentle rocking or swinging, and "shh-shh-shhing" as you are holding them. Remember that crying is normal! All babies do it, typically for about three hours a day. Certainly you want to respond to your baby's cries, but you aren't going to obliterate their tears. It's part of how they communicate, and you will learn to differentiate between the "I'm hungry" cry and the "pick me up" cry and the "burp me!" cry.
3. Offer a pacifier for soothing and sucking.

Talk to your pediatrician, as medical advice on pacifiers has changed over the years but the current advice is that babies should have pacifiers for sucking and soothing after breastfeeding is well-established (four to six weeks). Babies need to suck, and pacifiers meet that need. But if he spits it out, leave it out. If he wants it back, he'll let you know. Remember to use other soothing techniques as well when he's awake and fussy.
4. Sometimes feed your baby when he wakes up -- not just when you are trying to get him to sleep.
You want to avoid creating too strong an association between nursing and sleep because that may cause sleep problems later on. Try to find times to nurse her when she is getting up, not only when she is going to sleep. This is easy to do in the morning when they wake up (i.e. wake up, nurse, play, nap). At least once or twice a day, try to get into the pattern of nursing after naps and not before.

6. Introduce one bottle a day -- even if you are committed to breastfeeding -- by the third or fourth week if breastfeeding has been established.
Introducing a bottle in this time frame is much easier than when they are 6 months old and absolutely refuse! You can use either formula or your pumped breast milk. The idea is to have your baby learn how to use a bottle so she can have Dad or someone else feed her if need be (particularly if you are going back to work outside the home). Bottle feeding also lets both parents have a role in feeding the baby -- to give the nursing mom a break, or to just enjoy that special bond with the baby.

7. Create a sleep-friendly environment.
Install room darkening shades, decorate in calm soothing colors and skip the stimulating mobiles in the crib (or bassinet). Lullabies and white noise machines can be helpful if you live in a noisy area or environment. Play the lullabies during the bedtime routine. Once it goes off, leave it off or else your baby won't know how to sleep or get back to sleep without it
Avoid motion sleep (car, stroller or swing) for all naps after your baby is 8 weeks old. Motion sleep keeps the brain in a light sleep and is less restorative. It's ok for an occasional nap but from 3 months on you want most of the naps in a crib that is dimly lit, quiet and stationary.
Start a consistent bedtime routine from 6 weeks on. Start with a warm bath, maybe some infant massage, nursing or Dad giving a bottle, dim light, swaddling and holding and then into the crib or bassinette.

8) Nap when your baby naps! And get to bed early.
Having a newborn is tiring. Try not to get yourself so exhausted that you can't function. Being that exhausted may increase your risk for post-partum depression. It also just isn't any fun. Take care of yourself so you can enjoy your baby, and have some energy for your partner and any older children who are probably feeling a little uncertain about the new baby and need your time and attention. The dishes and the housework can wait. You and your family are more important.

About the Author (Publishers Website)
Suzanne Woods Fisher's interest in the Anabaptist cultures can be directly traced to her grandfather, W. D. Benedict, who was raised in the Dunkard Brethren Church in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Benedict eventually became publisher of Christianity Today magazine. Suzanne's work has appeared in many magazines. She has contributed to several nonfiction books and is the author of Amish Peace and the novel The Choice.

My Review
I really enjoyed this book. I thought that the changes that Carrie went through in the book were very real and happen to people everyday. It was interesting to read how she handles them and moves forward with her life and learns from all of the changes. I found the crises that she goes through very moving and heartfelt. I'd really recommend this book.

This is the first book in the Lancaster County Secrets series, and judging by this book I'll be reading the rest in the series.

Review of The Search for God and Guinness A Biography of the Beer that Changed the World By Stephen Mansfield

Hardcover: 304 pages
Publisher: Thomas Nelson (October 13, 2009)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 1595552693
ISBN-13: 978-1595552693

Description (Publisher Website)
The history of Guinness, one of the world’s most famous brands, reveals the noble heights and generosity of a great family and an innovative business.
It began in Ireland in the late 1700s. The water in Ireland, indeed throughout Europe, was famously undrinkable, and the gin and whiskey that took its place was devastating civil society. It was a disease ridden, starvation plagued, alcoholic age, and Christians like Arthur Guinness—as well as monks and even evangelical churches—brewed beer that provided a healthier alternative to the poisonous waters and liquors of the times. This is where the Guinness tale began. Now, 246 years and 150 countries later, Guinness is a global brand, one of the most consumed beverages in the world. The tale that unfolds during those two and a half centuries has power to thrill audiences today: the generational drama, business adventure, industrial and social reforms, deep-felt faith, and the beer itself.
Author Bio (Publisher Website)

Stephen Mansfield is a New York Times bestselling author and a popular speaker who is becoming one of the nation’s most respected voices on religion in American culture. He is author of The Faith of George W. Bush, The Faith of the American Soldier, Then Darkness Fled: The Liberating Wisdom of Booker T. Washington, and Never Give In: The Extraordinary Character of Winston Churchill, among other works of history and biography. In 2008, Mansfield wrote The Faith of Barack Obama, intended as an objective look at Obama’s religious life and the controversies that have surrounded it. The book reflects Mansfield’s ability to compassionately describe theological and political views that are not necessarily his own.
Founder of both The Mansfield Group, a research and communications firm, and Chartwell Literary Group, which creates and manages literary projects, Stephen is also in demand as a lecturer and inspirational speaker.

Review

I was intrigued by the title of this book. It's not often that you see God and Beer together like that, let alone from a Christian publisher like Thomas Nelson. I was also interested in it just from the historical angle.

Whether you drink beer or not, I think that you'll find this book very interesting. It covers the history of beer, as well as the history of the Guiness family. It's a timely look at a corporate model for how to treat employees and customers alike.

Bottom line is that I found this book to be very interesting on a lot of levels. I'm not sure that I agree with the idea that beer is a gift from God, but it's still an interesting read. Whether you're a Christian or not, or whether you're a beer drinker or not, you'll still find this book interesting.

I received a copy of this book for free from Thomas Nelson publishers as a member of their book review bloggers group.

In Find Your Strongest Life, Marcus Buckingham reveals the powerful key to bring fulfillment, peace, and control into a woman's life.
In today's world, can a woman truly "have it all"? A fulfilling career full of passion and performance? A belief that she is truly becoming the best, authentic version of herself? A happy, healthy life outside of work?
Countless women would roll their eyes at the possibility. Work is overwhelming. And for many of them, add the necessities of family and home. It all feels disconnected, out of control, and relentless.
In Find Your Strongest Life, Marcus Buckingham reveals the powerful key to help women draw enough strength from life to feel fulfilled, loved, successful, and in control. Even more, he helps women reconnect with their purpose and gives a starting point for change. A research-based message that applies to work and life, Find Your Strongest Life shows women how they really can have it all . . . the right kind of all.

Review
When I first got this book I really wondered if I was going to like it. I had never heard of this author before so I had no idea what his credentials were. After reading it, I'm not sure I really agree with what he has to say.

While I think it's important for women to see themselves as we really are vs how we THINK we're perceived by others, I think we've heard this message ad nauseum prior to this. I don't think anything new was really presented in this book. I don't think it can hurt to hear again how fabulous we are, but I don't think this book contains anything groundbreaking.

Honestly, I felt like it was another man telling us how we should feel. I found the whole concept a little arrogant.

I volunteered to read and review this book as part of the Thomas Nelson Book Review Bloggers Team, and was sent a free copy of the book by the publisher to review.
